Christmas Time

There is action in our kitchen
For it is that time of year
that Ma won't rest a moment
With Christmas coming near

She tidyed up the parlor
And she trimmed a Christmas tree
With the prettiest little dodads
That ever you do see

We have an artificial tree
She trims it every year
But it's not like the natural ones
We used to love so dear

I loved them old time tree hunts
Like we had so long ago
When we would take our hand sled
And go wandering through the snow

We would take a hatchet and a saw
To the forest we'd make haste
And cut a pine or hemlock tree
That suited our taste

It had to be just so so
To suit my mothers whims
With the right amount of taper
And the right amount of limbs

We would look it over carefully
For the limbs that may be dead
And if it had no defects
We would load it on our sled

Then we would hurry homeward
just full of joy and glee
And await our mother's judgement
On our selection of our tree

If she took it into the parlor
We knew she liked the tree
She'd smile and start to trim it
Oh' that smile was nice to see!

Now this was just a woodland tree
But when my mom got done
I think it looked much better
Than this artifical one

When she had the tree all finished
She'd say now I must try
To bake a cake and cookies
And I might stir up a pie

I think it was remarkable
the energy that was in her
For soon she's stuffing chickens
For a lucious Christmas dinner

The tree is trimmed and ready
And our stockings on the wall
We go to bed and listen
For old Santa Claus to call

In our dreams we see old Santa
A sitting on his load
Behind a team of reindeer
A coming down the road

We wake up in the morning
And find that He's been there!
There's nuts and candy in our socks
And presents everywhere!

And Pop would sit there grinning
Then he'd look at Mom and say
Mom, you have really done it
I was only in the way

That starts us all to thinking
Big sis and little brother
That we wouldn't have much Christmas
If it wouldn't be for mother

Now I don't mean to slight old Dad
For he furnished means and muscle
While Mother done the planning
In that old time Christmas hustle
